【現地レポート】速さと意地が交錯した鈴鹿 ― JALOXが追うRd.4 & Rd.5 ―

5月23日(土)・24日(日)、2026 SUPER FORMULA 第4戦・第5戦が三重県・鈴鹿サーキットで開催されました。国内外のトップドライバーたちが集う、日本最高峰フォーミュラカテゴリー・SUPER FORMULA。その中でも鈴鹿サーキットは、“ドライバーの実力が最も問われるコース”として知られる特別な舞台です。

一瞬の迷い、一度のミスがラップ全体を崩す。 マシン性能だけでなく、ドライバーの精度、タイヤマネジメント、空力バランス、そして精神力までも試されます。そんな鈴鹿で、TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACSは週末を通して際立つ速さを見せました。

しかし同時に、“速さだけでは勝てない”SUPER FORMULAの難しさも突きつけられることとなりました。

On May 23–24, the 2026 SUPER FORMULA Championship Rounds 4 and 5 were held at Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture. SUPER FORMULA is Japan’s premier formula racing category, bringing together top drivers from both Japan and around the world. Among all circuits on the calendar, Suzuka is regarded as a truly special venue — a track where a driver’s true ability is put to the ultimate test. A single moment of hesitation or one small mistake can compromise an entire lap. Not only car performance, but also driver precision, tire management, aerodynamic balance, and mental strength are all pushed to their limits. At such a demanding circuit, TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACS displayed standout pace throughout the weekend. At the same time, however, the team was also reminded of one of SUPER FORMULA’s harshest realities: speed alone is not always enough to win.

【Rd.4予選: TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACS、鈴鹿でフロントロー独占】

週末序盤からTEAM MUGEN AUTOBACSの2台は高い競争力を披露しました。 フリー走行の段階から安定したパフォーマンスを見せ、鈴鹿攻略に向けた仕上がりの良さを感じさせていました。

そして予選。Q1から岩佐歩夢選手、野尻智紀選手ともに高い安定感を披露し、危なげなくQ2へ進出しました。迎えたQ2では、TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACSの2台が鈴鹿を完全に支配しました。岩佐選手がポールポジションを獲得。さらに野尻選手が2番手につけ、TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACSがフロントロー独占を達成しました。

岩佐選手は、風向きや路面コンディションが金曜日と全く違う中で、ドライビングのアジャストに難しさを感じながらも、ラップ全体を高い完成度でまとめ上げ、見事ポールポジションを獲得しました。“誤魔化しの効かないサーキット”と言われる鈴鹿で最速を記録したことは、岩佐選手とTEAM MUGEN AUTOBACSの実力を強く証明する結果だったと言えます。

一方の野尻選手も、長年鈴鹿を知り尽くしたベテランらしい走りを披露。わずかな差でフロントロー2番手につけ、TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACSとして理想的な予選結果を持ち帰りました。

【Rd.4 Qualifying: TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACS Locks Out the Front Row at Suzuka】

From the very beginning of the weekend, the two TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACS cars demonstrated impressive competitiveness. Consistent pace throughout free practice suggested that the team had arrived at Suzuka exceptionally well prepared.

Then came qualifying.

Both Ayumu Iwasa and Tomoki Nojiri showed strong consistency in Q1 and comfortably advanced into Q2. In the decisive Q2 session, the two TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACS machines completely dominated Suzuka. Iwasa secured pole position, while Nojiri followed just 0.018 seconds behind in second place, giving TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACS a remarkable front-row lockout.

Despite facing completely different wind conditions and track characteristics compared to Friday, Iwasa successfully adapted his driving and delivered a highly refined lap to claim pole position. Setting the fastest time at Suzuka — often described as “a circuit that truly exposes a driver's ability” — was a powerful statement of both Iwasa’s ability and TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACS’s performance level. Meanwhile, Nojiri showcased the composure and precision expected from a veteran who knows Suzuka better than almost anyone. Missing pole by only a fraction, he completed an ideal qualifying result for the team.

【シリーズ第三弾 岩佐歩夢選手が語る：鈴鹿サーキット】

「鈴鹿のキーポイントとなるのは、セクター1全体です。セクター1は鈴鹿の中でも一番テクニカルで、タイムの上下が大きく出るセクターになります。セクター1が速いと、基本的に鈴鹿は上手く行きやすいかなという印象です。ただ今週末は、このセクター1で上手くベストタイムを出せていないので、少し伸び悩んでいますが、遅い部類にはいないので、やはりこのセクター1も大事だなと感じています。」

【Series Part 3: Ayumu Iwasa on Suzuka Circuit】

“The key point at Suzuka is the entire Sector 1. Sector 1 is the most technical part of the circuit, and it’s where lap time differences tend to become the most significant. When you’re quick in Sector 1, Suzuka generally tends to come together well overall.

However, this weekend we haven’t quite been able to extract our best possible time in Sector 1, so that’s been an area where we’ve struggled slightly. That said, we’re still not among the slower cars there, which once again shows just how important Sector 1 really is.”

【Rd.4決勝: 雨、タイヤ、戦略――速さだけでは届かなかった一戦】

しかし決勝は、予選とは全く異なるレースとなりました。

天候変化によってコンディションは不安定となり、各チームともタイヤ選択とピット戦略に頭を悩ませる展開となりました。SUPER FORMULAでは、タイヤ交換義務や路面変化への対応がレース結果へ直結します。その難しさが、このRd.4で色濃く現れました。レース後半、霧雨が降り始める中、各車が異なる戦略を採用。ウェット寄りの判断をするチーム、ドライ方向へ賭けるチーム、それぞれの思惑が交錯しました。

TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACSも難しい判断を迫られる中、岩佐選手は上位争いを狙い続けましたが、展開を完全に味方につけることはできませんでした。

最終的に岩佐選手は13位。 野尻選手もリタイアという悔しい結果に終わりました。

予選で圧倒的な速さを見せていただけに、チームとしても非常に悔しさの残るレースだったと言えます。

“速さ”と“結果”が必ずしも一致しない。 それこそがSUPER FORMULAの難しさであり、同時に面白さでもあります。

【Rd.4 Race: Rain, Tires, and Strategy — A Race Where Speed Alone Was Not Enough】

The race, however, unfolded very differently from qualifying.

Changing weather conditions created an unstable track environment, forcing every team into difficult decisions regarding tire choice and pit strategy.

In SUPER FORMULA, mandatory tire changes and adapting to evolving track conditions can directly determine race outcomes. The complexity of that challenge was fully exposed during Rd.4.

As light rain began to fall during the latter stages of the race, teams committed to different strategic approaches. Some leaned toward wet-oriented decisions, while others gambled on the track drying out.

TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACS also faced difficult choices throughout the race. Although Iwasa continued pushing to stay in contention near the front, the race circumstances ultimately did not fall in the team’s favor.

Iwasa eventually finished 13th, while Nojiri was forced to retire from the race.

Given the overwhelming pace shown in qualifying, it was undoubtedly a frustrating outcome for the team.

In SUPER FORMULA, “speed” and “results” do not always align. That difficulty is part of what makes the category both unforgiving and fascinating.

【Rd.5予選: 岩佐歩夢、再びフロントロー獲得】

そして迎えた日曜日。

前日の悔しさを振り払うように、岩佐選手は再び予選で速さを披露しました。

ポールポジションこそ福住仁嶺選手に譲ったものの、岩佐選手は再びフロントローを獲得。 Rd.4に続き、鈴鹿で最速クラスのパフォーマンスを維持していることを改めて示しました。

【Rd.5 Qualifying: Ayumu Iwasa Secures Another Front-Row Start】

Sunday brought a new opportunity.

Determined to put the disappointment of Saturday behind him, Iwasa once again demonstrated outstanding pace in qualifying.

Although pole position went to Nirei Fukuzumi, Iwasa secured another front-row start, once again proving that he remained among the fastest drivers at Suzuka throughout the weekend.

【Rd.5決勝: 鈴鹿を熱狂させた“歴史的な大接戦”】

Rd.5決勝は、スーパーフォーミュラの歴史に残る名勝負となりました。

レース中盤以降、タイヤ交換を終えトップチェッカーを争う福住選手、岩佐選手、太田選手らが僅差で周回を重ね、息を呑むような攻防が続きました。

特に終盤の岩佐選手の走りは圧巻でした。

後方から迫る坪井選手の猛追。 タイヤのウォームアップ差でプレッシャーをかけ続ける中、岩佐選手は冷静にラインをコントロールし、ポジションを死守しました。

さらに太田選手との激しい攻防。 岩佐選手はわずかな隙を狙い続け、果敢にアタックを仕掛けてオーバーテイク。その後も手に汗握る力強いディフェンスでポジションを守り抜きました。

そしてレース終盤、福住選手との一騎打ちへ。 チェッカー直前まで続いたそのバトルは、鈴鹿全体を熱狂させました。

コーナーでコンマ数秒を削り合い、 OTSを駆使した駆け引きを繰り広げ、 タイヤを酷使しながら最後の最後まで攻め続ける。

トップドライバーたちの意地と意地が真正面からぶつかり合う、まさに“これぞレース”と言える時間でした。

惜しくも優勝には届かなかったものの、岩佐選手は2位表彰台を獲得。

しかし、その価値は単なる“2位”という数字だけでは語れません。

最後まで諦めず攻め続けた姿勢、 そして観客を熱狂させた走りは、 間違いなく鈴鹿ラウンド最大級のハイライトでした。

【Rd.5 Race: A Historic Battle That Electrified Suzuka】

The Rd.5 race became an instant SUPER FORMULA classic.

From the opening lap, the leading group engaged in fierce battles at the front.

Following the pit window, Fukuzumi, Iwasa, and Ohta traded laps separated by only fractions of a second, creating a breathtaking fight for victory.

Particularly impressive was Iwasa’s performance in the closing stages.

Tsuboi charged from behind, applying relentless pressure with a tire warm-up advantage. Yet Iwasa calmly controlled his lines and defended his position with precision.

Then came the intense battle against Ohta. Iwasa continuously searched for the smallest opening, launched aggressive overtaking attempts, and defended fiercely afterward to maintain track position.

Finally, in the closing laps, the race evolved into a direct showdown with Fukuzumi.

That battle, which lasted all the way to the checkered flag, sent the entire Suzuka Circuit into a frenzy.

Drivers fought for tenths through every corner, traded tactical moves using OTS, and pushed their tires to the absolute limit until the very end.

It was a pure display of determination from some of the category’s finest drivers — exactly the kind of racing that defines SUPER FORMULA at its best.

Although victory narrowly slipped away, Iwasa secured a second-place podium finish.

Yet the significance of that result cannot be measured by the number “P2” alone.

His refusal to give up until the very end, along with a performance that captivated the crowd, undoubtedly became one of the defining highlights of the Suzuka weekend.

【おわりに】

Rd.4予選でのフロントロー独占。 そしてRd.5での歴史的とも言える大接戦。

今回の鈴鹿ラウンドは、TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACSと岩佐歩夢選手の“速さ”と“意地”が強く刻まれた週末となりました。

特に印象的だったのは、Rd.5決勝で見せた岩佐選手の戦い方です。

今季ここまで、速さを見せながらも展開や流れに苦しむレースが続いていました。 しかし今回の鈴鹿Rd.5で、ようやく“しっかりレースができた”という感覚がありました。

アウトラップでは坪井選手を抑え込み、 さらに太田選手からの強いプレッシャーや接近戦にも屈することなくポジションを守り切りました。

ただ速いだけではない。攻め、守り、駆け引き、 そしてプレッシャーへの対応。

SUPER FORMULAのトップ争いに必要なものを、岩佐選手は今回の鈴鹿で真正面からぶつけ切りました。

チャンピオン争いをしている太田選手との攻防は、非常に印象深いものでした。互いに強烈な速さを持つ若きトップドライバー同士。 しかしその戦い方は対照的にも見えました。強くプレッシャーをかけ続ける太田選手。 その中でも感情に飲まれることなく、自分のレースへ集中し続ける岩佐選手。単なる順位争いではなく、 互いの意地、覚悟、そしてプライドがぶつかり合うようなバトルでした。

そして終盤、 福住仁嶺選手とのチェッカー直前まで続いた大接戦。 あの瞬間、鈴鹿全体が息を呑んでいました。

もちろん、岩佐選手本人にとっても、ファンにとっても悔しさの残る2位だったはずです。

それでも今回のレース後には、これまでとは少し違う空気がありました。

“負けた悔しさ”だけでは終わらない。 速さだけではなく、レースそのものを戦い抜いた感触。最後まで攻め続け、真正面からライバルたちとぶつかり合い、そして“これぞ岩佐歩夢”という走りを見せてくれました。

だからこそ今回の2位は、単なる表彰台以上の意味を持つ結果だったように感じます。

鈴鹿で見せた、圧巻の速さ。 そして譲れない意地。

「次こそ」――

そう強く感じさせてくれる、非常に大きな意味を持つ週末でした。

【Conclusion】

A front-row lockout in Rd.4 qualifying. A historic wheel-to-wheel showdown in Rd.5.

This Suzuka weekend left a powerful impression of both the speed and determination shown by TEAM MUGEN AUTOBACS and Ayumu Iwasa.

What stood out most was the way Iwasa fought during the Rd.5 race.

Throughout the season so far, flashes of speed had often been overshadowed by difficult race circumstances and missed opportunities. But at Suzuka Rd.5, there was finally a sense that everything had come together into a complete race performance.

He successfully held off Tsuboi on the out-lap and withstood heavy pressure and close combat from Ohta without losing composure.

This was about far more than outright pace. Attack. Defense. Tactical awareness. Pressure management.

At Suzuka, Iwasa demonstrated every element required to compete at the very front of SUPER FORMULA.

His battle with championship rival Ohta was especially memorable. Both are young drivers possessing extraordinary speed, yet their approaches appeared contrasting at times. Ohta continued applying relentless pressure. Iwasa, meanwhile, remained composed and fully focused on executing his own race despite the intensity surrounding him. It felt like more than a battle for position — it was a clash of determination, pride, and conviction between two elite competitors.

Then came the closing fight against Nirei Fukuzumi, continuing right up until the checkered flag.

In that moment, the entire Suzuka Circuit seemed to hold its breath.

Of course, finishing second was frustrating both for Iwasa himself and for his fans. Even so, after this race, the atmosphere somehow felt different from previous rounds.

It was not simply the frustration of defeat. There was also the feeling of having truly fought through an entire race at the highest level. Iwasa kept attacking until the very end, faced his rivals head-on, and delivered the kind of performance that truly defines Ayumu Iwasa.

That is why this second-place finish felt like something far more meaningful than just another podium result.

The overwhelming speed shown at Suzuka. And the determination that refused to back down.

“Next time for sure.”

It was a weekend that strongly made everyone believe those words.
